For a great 2nd place, read "Mawson's Will". It's another survival story about Sir Douglas Mawson's expedition to map the Antarctic coast, south o Australia. Unreal, I'm disappointed that it was never adapted to film.

Just amazing. Unbelievable. Shackleton saved his men. SHACKLETON never stood a chance... luckily he returned back, cause if he continued trans-antarctic he would never be seen again (cause depots were never laid properly)... so both parts of the expedition were a complete disaster yet they reached fame and glory none the less... go figure... not deserved if u ask me, at least not in such degree

I suppose you could have done much better. Everyone knows he never achieved his goals. It's as though you've missed the point. The "fame and glory" you speak of is due to the fact that after 2 years of frozen hell, through some incredible feat of determination, every single man came home.

Seriously cold weather for Scott in 1912 though Amundsen had the same. Shackleton got the same in 1914, this failed expedition. I wonder what very recent expeditions have had in terms of weather? Bad? Good? Anthropogenic global warming?

can someone explain why they couldnt start the crossing from the place the ship was firstly grounded, it was only 100 miles from the shore, adding mere 5% of length to their crossing? surely they must have planned it with some 'buffer' zone
